Information and communications technology (ICT) students in the country have been advised to be creative in order to create employment opportunities for themselves as well as others.

The advice was given by country service manager for International Business Machines (IBM) Clarence Gama on Friday in Blantyre during a career seminar for about 120 students from St John Paul 11 Leadership and IT Institute, Soche Technical College, Mzuzu Technical College and National College of Information and Technology (Nacit).

“ICT has a wide range of opportunities and what students need to do is to be good at communication in order to keep up with changes that keep on happening in this information technology era,” said Gama.

In an interview, Declan Somers, marketing director for Beehive Centre for Social Enterprise, said the seminar was organised as one way of bridging the gap between what students know and what the industry expects from them.

“We wanted to instill confidence in the young graduates that they should be able to take up challenging opportunities. The seminar has been an eye-opener on our part as St John Paul, because even though we are in Chilomoni Township, we have been motivated to think global,” said Somers.

The seminar, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), also involved a skype presentation by Yohane Kasiya, a former lecturer at St John Paul 11 Leadership and IT Institute who is now working in the United Kingdom, who took the students on challenges that every job seeker in the ICT field faces, despite which country they are in.
